She Forgot the Grits

Why must everything
be a thing? Why
does every leaf-fall end
in catastrophe, every
botherant molehill rise
to become a Homeric
mountain we scale again
and again and again when
the wind is so welcoming,
the sun so undemanding, the
clouds so driftingly unconcerned
by our dwindling peaks while we
ignore the view?

Priorities

I gave my dog a carrot.
She nosed it into the
ground, into the grass
and walked away, having
reached the end of some
dog-algorithm that tells
her a carrot is worth
saving, grass for safe-
keeping, and that I will
always wait to watch,
with two hands and a
face she’s allowed to lick.

Sustainable

When our office switched from recyclable
cups to sustainable mugs my boss

said she never pours tea into coffee
mugs because coffee was a thoughtless

guest who never, really, leaves, like
there’s always one sock left under

the couch to be found six months later.
I shrugged because I’d never found so

much as a quarter beneath the cushions.

Jesus, too, warned against pouring new
wine into old wine skins lest they burst

and stain the carpet but my coffee
mug has never

yet

cracked.
